Gillian McCormack is Internews' Regional Director for Europe and Eurasia Programs.

Gillian has 20 years of experience in media development, electoral assistance and training, including three years working for Internews in Russia from 2004 to 2007.

In the late 90s and early 2000s Gillian headed CIS Projects at the European Institute for the Media in Düsseldorf, carrying out media research and journalist support projects in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova. Gillian also worked on election observation missions in Cambodia, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, Turkmenistan and Zambia. She was the Training Coordinator for the EU’s Network for Enhanced Electoral and Democratic Support Project from 2008 to 2012, is a BRIDGE-accredited facilitator and updated the BRIDGE Media and Elections module in 2011.

Gillian holds a PhD in media development, an MA in Russian and has written numerous publications in the field of media and elections. She speaks English, Russian and German.

The 2016 survey reveals a drop in trust of Russian media, an increase in people getting their news from the internet, and a growing awareness of ownership of local and national media.
