Daniel Bruce

Chief Executive, Europe

Daniel Bruce first joined Internews in 2008 and today heads up its London headquarters as Chief Executive in Europe. Along with the rest of the senior team, he plays a key role in developing Internews’ global program strategies; while also being ultimately responsible the quality of Internews’ projects funded by European donors.

Bruce spent his early career as a journalist, editor and broadcaster in the UK. He won several awards for his work in the independent radio sector, which included various set-piece international assignments.

Bruce originally joined Internews as Chief-of-Party in Uganda where he led a large program providing much needed training and organizational support to dozens of radio stations and journalists working in the north of the country. This was at a time when the north was emerging from a twenty-year conflict between the Ugandan state and the Lord's Resistance Army. A year later he directed the initial phase of what grew to be a sizeable 5-year program to stabilize and professionalize Kenya's media sector in the run-up to the country's 2013 Presidential Election.

Since being appointed Chief Executive in Europe in early 2014, he has led the development of new multi-year strategies in key program areas, such as Internews' human rights work supporting freedom of expression worldwide.

Bruce also previously supported dozens of media development and freedom of expression programs across three continents for Article 19, the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association, Fondation Hirondelle, Media Support Solutions and others. Across East Africa, he led a program to develop new self-regulatory frameworks for independent media as part of UNESCO’s International Program for the Development of Communication.

In his last broadcasting role, Bruce served as a Network Editor for one of the UK's independent radio groups. He has worked closely with the communications regulator Ofcom, and was an industry representative to House of Lords Communications Committee.  He has also served as juror for the One World Media Awards.

Bruce is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an Associate of both the London College of Music and Media and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
