The Internews Community Mourns the Passing of Colleague Persephone Miel

Persephone MielWe received the sad news on June 29, 2010 that we had been hoping wouldn’t come. Our dear friend and colleague Persephone passed away on June 28th surrounded by her husband, their step-daughters, her mother, and her aunt. We are heartbroken to lose our dear and longtime friend.  She has touched so many individual lives over the course of her work and will be remembered by so many worldwide.

Persephone dedicated her life to advancing the cause of freedom of expression and supporting the work of journalists around the world. She is remembered by many who were in Moscow in the 1990s as one of the smooth voices of Open Radio.  She went on to become a tireless advocate for free speech, Internet freedom and a free press. She is remembered by those who had the privilege to know her for her wisdom, her wit, her honesty, her determination and her compassion.

Persephone made it clear how she would like to be remembered.  She believed strongly that quality fellowships can be life changing for the heroic journalists she has worked with around the world. She requested that we work with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting to build such a fellowship program. This fellowship will be available for non-native English speaking media professionals who work in their native country for them to do the kind of research, media or innovative communications work they’ve always wanted outside of their native country but could never afford to do.  We feel this is such an appropriate way to honor Persephone, who brought tremendous innovation and insight to her work, coupled with poise, grace and tremendous dedication.

Persephone is survived by her husband Tony Rudie, her step-daughters Emma, Ingrid and Lizzie, her parents Jan and Elizabeth (MacKiernan) Miel, her brother Justin Miel, his wife Karen and niece Samantha.  A memorial service will be held by her family in the coming weeks. We are gathering condolences together for Persephone and will be passing those on to her family.  Please do forward anything you would like to send to info@internews.org and we will make sure it gets to her family.  The cyber community is already posting in remembrance @fonchik on twitter. Over the past weeks the outpouring of photos, videos and notes has meant so much to Persephone.

Internews is a richer organization for having Persephone be a part of us for so many years and we are all richer for having had her as a friend and colleague.

Best wishes, thoughts and prayers for Persephone and her family.
