Internews is currently implementing the “Strengthening Free and Independent Media in South Sudan” (i-STREAM) project, a 5-year USAID-funded program through September 2018 that seeks to create and embolden local institutions, firmly entrench ownership of media development in the hands of the most well -placed South Sudanese media institutions, and leave behind a more resilient sector.

i-STREAM’s overall goal is: To strengthen a free and independent media in South Sudan, with an emphasis on the independent radio sector by supporting the transition to self-sustainability of five currently funded USAID-supported local partner radio stations and focusing on improving the professional preparation of journalists, the economic self-sustainability of media houses, the enabling environment for a free media, and the support institutions for a freer media.

A critical component of i-STREAM is a local subgrants program, ensuring the entire sector is motivated, inspired and included in the overall vision of i-STREAM. It includes awards to South Sudanese organizations only. The subgrants program is more than just a process for disbursing funds; it also aims to build the programmatic and institutional capacity and internal controls of partner organizations. Projects considered under the subgrants program may include a range of projects focusing on improving the professional preparation of journalists, the economic self-sustainability of media houses, the enabling environment for a free media, and the support institutions for a freer media. Internews is looking for great ideas that combine creativity and innovation with clear, practical and positive impact for South Sudan.

Over the course of the i-STREAM project, Internews anticipates releasing approximately 3 different Requests for Applications. This RFA is the second request, and will seek to fund from 5-10 grantees, ranging in value from $5,000 to $150,000 USD.
