Lourdes Ramirez, Internews Media Specialist, is speaking on a panel – In the Crossfire: Local Journalism and the Fight for Free Information – at the Central American Donors Forum 2019 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
The International Women’s Media Foundation and Internews will discuss the challenges and opportunities facing local independent media in Central America, and the potential for journalism to positively shape the arc of development in the region. Panelists will focus on key areas in which funders can leverage impact in the region, including in investigative journalism, cross-border collaborations, and amplifying the diverse voices and stories of marginalized communities. The panel will also address the significant security and holistic challenges that journalists in Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador but also Nicaragua and Mexico currently face. Panelists will provide context for discussion of successful cross-border investigations, data-driven reporting, and tools and techniques for journalists’ enhanced digital and physical security.
The Central America Donors Forum is the premier networking and learning space to advance philanthropy and development efforts in Central America. The 2018 Forum, held in San Salvador, El Salvador, brought together over 400 leaders from business, philanthropy, government, and civil society to discuss priority issues and successful models of development, and explore co-investment for social impact.
