Monmouth and Ocean Counties occupy New Jersey’s northernmost coastal stretch, just south of New York City. The more than one million residents in this area were some of the hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy in 2012, with thousands displaced from their homes, and the future viability of some area communities thrown into question.
Researchers Jesse Hardman and Natalie Chang visited the region in December 2015 to look at the information needs of residents in Post-Sandy Jersey Shore communities, and identify new approaches for local journalism site Jersey Shore Hurricane News (JSHN) to sustain and expand its two-way conversation with citizens. JSHN is perceived by locals as a way to be heard and get essential, relevant hyperlocal reporting.
