With Internews support, Journalists in Danger (JED), the most effective association of journalists for the defense and the promotion of press freedom in the Democratic Republic of Congo, published a handbook in French on physical security for journalists in electoral periods.
An electoral process started in July 2015 in the DRC. However, national and local elections have been postponed several times due to multiple political blockages. In the same time, the closing of the political space and a rising insecurity due to the multiplication of local conflicts seriously increase risks for independent journalists. For 2017, JED annual report presents 121 cases of documented attacks against press freedom, a 30% rise compared to 2016, in a context in which self-censorship is a deep-rooted habit in newsrooms. In the DRC, electoral periods are a climax in violence against journalists.
