For World Press Freedom Day in Santiago, Chile, Internews, the Center for International Media Assistance, the Committee to Protect Journalists and the Thomson Reuters Foundation will host a side event entitled Survival Strategies: How Exile Media Adapt to New Realities on May 4 from 15:30 to 17:00.
The number of media organizations in exile is growing as journalists flee closing democratic spaces and political persecution in record numbers across the globe.
Facilitated by CIMA’s Nick Benequista and Internews’ Rosie Parkyn, this session will focus on the experiences of exiled journalists and media organizations, calling particular attention to those displaced by events unfolding away from the global spotlight. It will reflect on how to sustain their efforts to keep reporting from afar and ensure impartial information remains available in places too dangerous to operate from.
A fishbowl format will encourage attendees to be in conversation with our speakers:
- Dr. Isabelle Schlaepfer, Research Manager, Internews, and author, “Flight and Fight, Supporting Exiled Media to Survive and Sustain.”
- Rosie Parkyn, Global Director of Impact and Learning, Internews
- Will Church, Director Media Freedom Programmes, Thomson Reuters Foundation.
- Nick Benequista, Senior Director, Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA).
- Saba Kidane, Erisat TV, Eritrea.
