When a person who is experiencing respiratory distress, sits down while leaning forward with their arms resting on their knees or stands with their arms resting on another surface such as a table to help relieve their distress. The additional stability and support provided by their arms act as a third leg, hence the name, tripod.
A patient who is seen taking the tripod position on their own is an indication that the patient may be in respiratory distress.
