A liquid, gel or foam used to remove or reduce viruses, bacteria, or other pathogens (germs) present on hands.
In most cases, hand washing with soap and water is more effective to remove germs, but hand sanitiser may be more convenient or more easily available. Health agencies recommend using an alcohol-based hand rub consisting of more than 60% ethanol or 70% isopropanol, for it to be effective against COVID-19. Non-alcohol based hand sanitisers are not effective against viruses. The cost of sanitisers can be prohibitive in low-income countries or communities.
