Basem Hassan is Internews’s Director of Communications. He devises and executes comprehensive external communications strategies that includes media relations, thought-leadership marketing, funder engagement and advocacy.
Most recently he was a National Strategy Director overseeing the planning and execution of the 2020 US Census campaign focusing on “hard to count” ethnic audiences. His background includes multiple leadership roles directing national and global communications for corporations, NGOs and nonprofits, and federal entities including The Department of Commerce, The State Department, and select D.C. Embassies.
Basem holds an M.Ed. degree from Columbia University specializing in Cross Cultural Communications, a M.F.A. from Rutgers University specializing in Visual Communications, and a B.F.A. from the Fashion Institute of Technology in Communication Design. He is a tenured professor and has taught or developed cultural communications programs at institutions including Columbia University, Guggenheim Museum Sackler Education Center, The MET, MOMA, and Rutgers University.
