Kyrgyzstan Survives on Outside Money but does not Know How to Spend It

The International Journalists’ Network (IJNet)’s list of important innovative reporting from 2018 includes a story produced by Media-K’s Data Journalism Fellows. The story, “Dependent country. Kyrgyzstan survives on ourside money but does not know how to spend it,” written by fellows Savia Hasanova and Anna Kapushenko and published by Kloop Media, is among the most influential Russian-language articles of 2018 according to IJNet.

Using open data sources, the fellows came to the unfortunate conclusion that, while the country heavily depends on money transfers from labor migrants, those receiving the transfers do not use the funds to generate further income, and therefore continue to be dependent on relatives working abroad.

This story was also translated and published in English and German.
