Community transmission

The spread of a virus at the local community level, in everyday circumstances, from person to person, in places like markets, homes, and events, rather than in previously known, contained environments such as quarantine centres and hospitals.

Prevention of community transmission is the reason many countries gave for implementing COVID-19 lockdowns, quarantines, and other measures. Epidemiologists regard community transmission as a turning point in the progression of the spread of the disease because it is no longer only about imported cases but also transmission at a local level. One of the most important tools available to tackle community transmission is contact tracing.
