The technical or medical name given to the novel coronavirus discovered in 2019 that has lead to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
 

SARS-CoV-2 belongs to a large family of coronaviruses that includes MERS-CoV and SARS CoV-1.

SARS stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, Co is short for Corona, V for Virus, and 2 is to denote that it is the second coronavirus known to be associated with SARS. Infection with SARS-CoV-2 causes COVID-19.
