Shelter in place

An official order given to all residents to remain at their place of residence

Shelter in Place orders can be given in emergency situations such as shooting and bombing incidents and the accidental or deliberate release of chemical, radiological, and biological contaminants into the environment.

In the context of COVID-19, shelter in place orders may apply specifically to individuals or groups judged to be at-risk for death or serious complications if infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It contrasts with self-isolation (voluntary seclusion at home to prevent infecting others) and self-quarantine (voluntary seclusion of individuals exposed to infection for a period to determine infection status).
