Internews has worked in the Kyrgyz Republic since 1995, developing a reputation as a trusted partner for local media and civil society organizations through support for the growth, professionalism, and independence of the country’s media sector. Areas of focus in the Kyrgyz Republic include: improving reporting and media management skills; modernizing independent media outlets and monetizing their content for greater financial sustainability; supporting local production of quality, socially-relevant content in Russian and Kyrgyz, including in remote regions of the country; building up the data and investigative journalism fields for increased accountability; capacity building in conflict-sensitive reporting and communications; digital security; information and civic engagement campaigns around COVID-19 and elections; youth engagement initiatives to promote diverse local voices; media literacy campaigns to improve critical thinking and resilience to disinformation; and bringing together local media and media support organizations in efforts to improve the safety and transparency of the information space.
