Blood plasma

The liquid in which blood cells float. Clear and yellowish in colour, plasma carries blood cells around the body. It is sometimes referred to as liquid gold. It is used in antibody therapy.

Plasma donated from patients who have overcome a disease (for e.g. COVID-19)  and recovered is called convalescent blood plasma and is rich in antibodies specific to that disease.

In antibody therapy, the antibody-rich plasma is separated from the blood cells by a machine and then given intravenously in saline solution to patients. Blood plasma can be easily frozen and transported as required.
