Cells

The smallest units of a living organism that responsible for all of life’s processes. They can make copies of (replicate) themselves and are called the building blocks of life.

SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, like other viruses, invades healthy cells in the body, hijacking them and using them as factories to produce multiple copies of itself. This viral replication eventually destroys healthy cells, causing disease and, in some cases, death.
