When large groups gather – for example at religious events, funerals, weddings, concerts, and political rallies – dramatically increasing the risk of a virus spreading and infecting many people.

These events carry a higher risk of a virus spreading especially if attendees do not wear masks or fail to keep at least a two-meter distance from others. The risks increase if the events are held in cramped and unventilated indoor spaces.

US President Donald Trump has been severely criticised for hosting several superspreader events including in the gardens of the White House. Several guests at the Rose Garden event, including administration staff, failed to wear masks or to socially distance. As a result, some attendees tested positive for SARS-CoV-2.
