Over 10 years, Internews grew its flagship data journalism program to improve the health and wellbeing of all Kenyans through Data Dredger, a hub for all things open data and data journalism in the country. Data journalism activities grew from data literacy sessions and off-the-shelf infographics development for newsrooms to six-month investigative data journalism fellowships for journalists from Kenya’s leading newsrooms.

Internews activities permanently changed the Kenyan media landscape to include data-driven storytelling, including the creation of Nation Newsplex, Kenya’s only permanent data desk in a major media house. Activities focused on Kenya’s most serious development challenges: HIV and AIDS, reproductive health, maternal and child health, extractive industries and economics, spanning all forms of mainstream media, online and digital platforms.

The program is credited with positioning Kenya as a leader in data journalism in Africa and spurring the Kenyan government to change several laws to improve the lives of its citizens.
